Measurement of coating thickness, grain, size, small parts, etc.

Asbestos detection in insulation and fireproofing materials, plasters, acoustical ceilings, etc.  EPA required technique for building materials in schools.

Refractive index determination of glass and other small particles using oil immersion techniques.

Asbestos fiber counting of air samples using membrane filters.  NIOSH required technique for workplace exposure monitoring.
